The words “hospitality” and “management” aren’t very specific. Therefore, the college major hospitality management sounds like one of those vague, nebulous, non-majors that slackers choose to get a bachelor’s degree. In reality, though, the hospitality management major is quite misunderstood. Hospitality management covers a wide range of several very important roles in society. Some of these roles include the following professions:
- Hotel manager
- Casino manager
- Club manager
- Tourism manager
In other words, if you want to go anywhere and do anything fun, you’re going to run into the effects of hospitality management. You might not meet the manager of the hotel you’re staying at on vacation, but because he or she exists and because he or she studied the trade, your experience will be much better than it otherwise would have been.
You might be saying, “but how?” The rest of this article will focus on the career of hotel manager, describing features of that person’s duties and how it can affect you. Hotel managers are tasked, first and foremost, with creating a sense of comfort and ease for their customers. How they do that, though, is by controlling nearly every aspect of the hotel. The front desk’s operations, the kitchen’s operations, managing the pool staff, the cleaning staff — anyone who works at the hotel is ultimately under supervision by the hotel manager. As you can imagine, that’s not an easy job.
On top of managing a huge staff, hotel managers have to respond to customer complaints and direct the marketing and advertising efforts of the hotel. Because of these numerous and demanding tasks, the hotel manager position isn’t for everyone. This major and this job is not for slackers.
